Is your metabolism slowing down?

metabolism perimenopause weight gain Nov 03, 2023

Most of us care about our metabolism simply because it relates to weight management.

If it slows down, we gain weight. Right?

Right.

But the question is, has yours actually SLOWED down for good?

Well, let's start with the bad news...yes, post 40 your metabolism is probably working differently, less effectively, less efficiently...so to all intents and purposes, slower.

From Perimenopause onwards our hormonal responses to food, exercise and lifestyle have changed. For good. Meaning the ways we fuel, move and live need to adjust into line, in order to maintain good metabolic health.

"Good" metabolic health means less mood swings, energy dips, weight gain, stress, anxiety, pain and brain fog.  Basically a better and more enjoyable life!

But the good news is...there are ways to give it a boost ğŸš€.

So here we go...my top 5 tips for boosting YOUR metabolic health are

  1. Eat more protein. Not only will this help with sugar cravings, snacking and energy dips, but it is harder for the body to digest meaning your metabolism has to work harder. Fuelling your body with sugar, carbs and processed food is going to make your metabolism lazy!
  2. Eat whole foods, for the same reason as above, avoiding things that spike the blood sugar (like tropical fruit or raisins)
  3. Boost your gut health because research shows that there are good bugs that actually favour feeding on our fat stores, but there are also those that LOVE to build the fat stores. We want those good bugs!
  4. Exercise and build more muscle. Muscle burns more calories at rest making it a boost for the metabolism.
  5. Get good sleep because without it you will be fighting hormonal responses that are telling you to eat more sugar and generally eat more!

These are the principles that I see make the biggest difference to women, so over to you...which will you try?
